Preparing students for success remains my underlying motivation. This motivation is based on two core beliefs: 1) that every person has the potential to achieve his or her goals, and 2) that every single person has the capacity to grow into a fully functional, participating member of society.
Not everyone engages the world in the same way, but everyone's engagement carries special meaning. Everyone has an equally important part to play. Everyone has something to share. Everyone has something to learn. Because of this, I am a proponent of cooperative learning, and I want my classroom culture to reflect this in both physical and digital spaces.
As an educator, I believe in a literate society because literacy is one of the principal ways by which we measure the health of any civilization. My goal is to train students with the skills and knowledge required for living in our highly literate, information-reliant society.
No student is beyond success. I want my students to know the value of self-reliance, but I also want them to know the value of cooperation. I want them to practice self-responsibility and self-accountability. I want them to live by the rules of service, duty, integrity, and honor. I want them to have the things they need in order to live well and act as a positive force on the world around them. More than anything, I want them to understand that we are all valued members of a shared community and that none of us is alone.
