I started tutoring and teaching as a way to support myself in college and graduate school. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Guilford College, a Masters in Geoscience from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from Stony Brook University. My students averaged a grade of A- per semester at both Harvard and Stony Brook.
As a research scientist I found that I miss the interaction with students, especially that moment when they grasp a difficult concept or acquire a skill they thought they'd never get.
Mathematics is a discipline that builds like a pyramid -- if you are missing a foundation skill, the whole structure will fall. So part of what I focus on is identifying the fundamental skills the person is missing and focus on practicing those. I provide additional practice problems so the student can cement their understanding and make math problem solving as automatic as possible.
I have a thorough understanding of the material coupled with a genuine interest in helping my students understand the concept. I have been trained as a mathematician and as a scientist, in the US and Europe. This has exposed me to different ways to teach and approach a problem.
