I am a recent graduate from Texas State University with a B.S. in Biology and
a minor in Chemistry. I am eager to begin my career in this tutoring position that will allow me to combine the knowledge I have acquired through my academic life and teaching experiences so that I can spark the interest to science for young students.
My science major has embedded in me a great passion for biology, combined with a critical ability to apply my knowledge to explain every biological event happening around me. I began my teaching experience by leading group study sessions for classmates, utilizing an approach that connected classroom learning with real-life applications. Feedback indicated that this type of approach led to much better recall on examinations. During my academic life, I was eventually referred to an Instructional Assistant position in the
biology department. This job fit me perfectly: I was able to delve deeper into biology while teaching freshmen in hopes that they would pursuit biology as well.
Being an instructional assistant has opened my eyes in many ways. I realized the important difference between understanding a concept and being able to effectively convey that concept to others. Therefore, I had to come up with different methods to ensure that my students, with their level of understanding, would be able to comprehend upper level materials. Furthermore, I had to learn how to manage and encourage students with vastly
different kinds of knowledge levels, performance, attitude, and backgrounds.
In conclusion, through my almost two years in the job, I have developed strong and unique teaching skill, communication, public speaking, coordination, interpersonal skills and leadership that would make me an ideal tutor for your academic thirst of knowledge in biology.
