Hello, I'm Layla! I went to college at NYIT where I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Biology and Psychology. In college, I realized how the professors I had impacted the interest I had in a specific class. I faced the harsh reality that I had to do well in class, even when I had a bad professor. In some cases I had to be tutored to learn the material and in others I taught myself after class. This experience equipped me with the tools I needed to succeed in school and outside of school. I learned how important perseverance was because I pushed through difficult times while I was struggling.
My academic course-load has allowed me to take Honors Biology, AP Biology, Honors Chemistry, AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1, and AP Physics 2 in high school. And in college I was able to take Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry 1, Organic Chemistry 2, Physics 1, Physics 2, Human Physiology, Comparative Anatomy, Microbiology, Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Sociology, Dynamics of Violence, and Intergroup Relationships: Understanding Prejudice, Stereotyping, and Discrimination. I have a great deal of knowledge in biology and chemistry. I am an experienced tutor in both of those fields. I also have a passion for writing. I have blog that I run, and I have been published in various anthropologies. I have tutored students in essay writing, speech giving, and literature.
I believe my struggles in college and being on the side of being a tutee taught me how to be a better tutor. I learned how important it was to explain concepts in certain ways and change a tutoring session so that it fit the needs of the student. Tutoring is one of my greatest passions. I hope to help students improve academically and have more confidence when they take hard classes in the future.
My goal is to help students improve their knowledge in their desired subject, and to equip them with the study skills necessary to succeed. Tutoring is very important to me, since I have been on both sides of the spectrum. I have been a tutor and I have been tutored. I try to tutor in a way that I would have appreciated when I was tutored. I do this by incorporating various visual and auditory elements in my tutoring sessions. I take into account what how student's learn best and try to incorporate that into my lessons.
I have tutored high school students and college students in math, science, english, and social studies. In high school I was a peer tutor. I tutored students in ESL, essay writing, earth science, biology, and chemistry. I would utilize the resources they had from class in order to help them. I would also try to explain concepts in the simplest terms possible. I am open to any resources parents and students have to share with me that they believe will help them. I want to ensure the student's success to the best of my ability. I am very open and quick to respond to any questions I receive. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions!
