Biography: Benjamin W. Hughes is an adjunct Professor at New York University. He studied Biology at Fisk University, and received his Ph.D. in physiology from Meharry medical College. During his dissertation phase of research, Hughes used patch clamp and intracellular recording techniques to evaluate calcium homeostasis in canine myocardial tissues with Mohit lal Bhattacharrya. Benjamin’s journey continued to Atlanta where performed his first postdoctoral work during a joint appointment at Morehouse School of Medicine and Emory University examining imidazoline 1 (I1) receptor activity in ocular hypertension. Dr. Hughes’ postdoctoral training continued in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hypertension.at Case Western Reserve University, where he was a member of a team that studied Angiotensin 2 receptor activation and signal transduction. Dr. Hughes left academia for a while to become an account manager with Zeiss Microscopes, but returned to Case a year later and entered the Division of Nephrology as a Senior Research Fellow. During his tenure there, he used transgenic knockout mice to study progressive mechanisms of kidney disease development. After studying for an MBA in Pharmaceutical Management at Rutgers University, Dr. Hughes became an independent business consultant and obtained an adjunct faculty position at New York University, where he developed and teaches a course to undergraduate and graduate students titled “Biological Foundations for Bioinformatics”. Additionally, Dr. Hughes has been a faculty member at myriad colleges and Universities in the US and currently teaches science courses to urban youth, with the intent being to help close the academic achievement gap in urban student populations in the NY and NJ areas. Dr. Hughes has been the recipient of many honors and awards, some of which include: a New York City Teaching Fellowship, an NIH NIDDK Travel Fellowship and The Acres of Diamonds Award for Distinction Oral and Presentation and Poster Session at the NIH/NIDDK Trainee Research Forum Fellowship, an NIH Hypertension Training Grant, an MBRS Biomedical Research Support Predoctoral Fellowship, a UNCF Outstanding Leadership Award, and many others. Dr. Hughes has authored or co-authored peer-reviewed manuscripts in the cardiology, neurology and nephrology medical areas.
