I'm Arturo, "Turo" for short! I graduated summa cum laude in 2019 with a Bachelor's degree in History. Throughout my time in school, my favorite classes were the ones taught by passionate teachers; people who not only knew their subjects, but enjoyed teaching others about them. That kind of enthusiasm is infectious and I try to bring that to my lessons. History is often stereotyped as a boring subject, but I believe it just takes the right topic to get someone interested. I look forward to working with my students to deep dive into their studies, finding the one piece of information that hooks them, and using that to strengthen their knowledge.
I have peer-tutored throughout my academic career, starting in 5th grade helping younger students with reading, moving into social studies and history in middle school and high school. In college, I tutored early American history for a year and presented sample public history projects for underclassmen. I have always enjoyed teaching. It is so important to feed an appetite for knowledge, especially in young people. The books, skills, and lessons people are exposed to in their youth shape them for the rest of their lives. I hope I can be a positive force in those areas.
Reading comprehension and writing skills are essential to a history degree, so I am happy to offer tutoring in those areas as well. Does your senior research paper seem impossible? Synthesizing large amounts of information into cohesive writing can be a daunting task, but there are tried and true methods for turning a large job into a series of smaller, more manageable ones. Nothing is impossible if you know how to organize and plan!
My specialty is modern American history, focusing on 20th century race discrimination in urban centers. For world history, I am fascinated by the work of environmental historians who tell the story of how humans have interacted with the earth itself, as well as the pre- and post-European expansion eras leading up to the first world war.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions about subjects, lessons, or scheduling. I look forward to working with you!
