Hello, I’m Christopher. I completed my education at Hofstra University with a Bachelor’s in Management and a Master’s in Sports Management. Throughout high school and college, I was fortunate to have a strong support system around me that helped keep me on track and navigate the rigors of the collegiate process. This helped me score in the 98th percentile on the ACT. My goal is to pass forward this support to other students to help them succeed and realize their potential. I have tutored in a variety of subjects, including but not limited to Math and Business. However, I primarily focus on SAT/ACT test prep due to the tremendous positive impact that I have been able to make with students through the admissions and scholarship processes. For the past two years, I have maintained this test prep emphasis through my work with a national tutoring company. I worked as both a one-on-one tutor and served as a head tutor in charge of designing curriculum and teaching SAT group classes.
During this time, I have helped many students through the admission process. I have helped students of all skill and test score levels improve. This begins with ensuring they are realizing their true potential on the standardized tests. Each student has their own unique strengths and weaknesses. My goal as a tutor is to help find these skill points so we can develop a plan to improve them. One of my first priorities when meeting with a new student is to establish what they know. This can be established through their coursework, grades in school, and going through practice problems to identify weaknesses. Once students are comfortable with the content being tested, I look to inform the students of the structure and strategies associated with the test. Often times, this is where the majority of practice takes place as the test forces students to apply the material they learned in school in unique ways and use critical thinking skills to develop methods for solving these problems. These critical thinking skills will help serve the student way beyond the test: college coursework and career opportunities require individuals to be innovative and creative in their thought process. My hope is that the skills I am helping build for this test will lead to a lifetime of success.
With that being said, tutoring is more than giving knowledge. Effective tutoring requires a personal connection with the student to develop trust. Regardless of if a student’s past experience was a score below 1000 or above 1500, my top priority is to empathize with the student to develop trust and determine how to best convey information. I believe that students are more likely to fully commit to their studies if they have a trusting relationship and, therefore, believe what the tutor is teaching. This is important because studying requires a deep commitment from the student. The students that have had the most success while working with me are those who are actively engaged and are willing to dedicate time and energy outside of our meetings to continue their progress.
Additionally, I enjoy helping students work through the admissions process. This can range from helping them select potential schools, writing application essays, and projecting the long-term potential of the schools they pick (financial aid, career opportunities, etc.)
My goal is to give students all the information, materials, and guidance for them to practice these skills until they achieve the marks they need/desire. As long as students are willing to commit to the hard work necessary to increase their test scores, we can work together to achieve their goals. I look forward to helping you succeed!
