While relatively new to the Hey Tutor Platform, I am not new to teaching! I LOVE teaching students of all ages and academic levels. I am certified to teach K-8 in all subjects, as well as SAT/ACT/PSAT Test Prep, where my personalized Test Prep program draws from successful concepts that exceed top programs; I currently boast a 100 percent success rate, for increased scores! I also provide top-level reading and spelling improvements through the well-acclaimed Orton-Gillingham method.
I have a passion for teaching and a mission to help high school students achieve academic success on their ACT/SAT exams and reduce or eliminate their student debt; as well as help K-8 students discern their strengths and build on them, to attain academic excellence. I personalize my teaching methods to meet the different learning styles of students of all ages. I home-schooled my own children, who had various learning styles and struggles, through high school and into college. Both made the Dean's list. One just graduated Summa Cum Laude and the other also holds a 4.0 GPA and is set to do the same in a few months. I also graduated Summa Cum Laude, so academic excellence is of utmost importance to me. I strive to pass that excellence along to my students in a friendly, relaxed environment of learning.
I find a good rapport is key to good learning. Therefore, I love to focus on affirming each student's gifts and strengths, as part of building that rapport. This also helps build their confidence and - as I often find - results in increased grades throughout all their subjects. There are many smart students who just need to have the content taught to them in a way they 'get it', and they begin to excel in their academics. My 15 years of home-school teaching has also allowed me to discern well what a student's needs are, and to hone in on the teaching style that works best for him or her. I work well with high-performing students, as well as those who have dyslexia, ADHD, and those on the spectrum, as I am able to create an atmosphere that allows them the relaxed freedom to learn their materials in a manner that best suits them.
I would be remiss not to mention the high-quality reading/spelling program I use, based on the Orton-Gillingham Method. This method provides students with logical answers to so many common questions they have about the English language. Have you ever wondered: "If the silent final 'e' on the end of a word makes the previous vowel say its name - such as in 'cave' or 'hive' - then what about words like, 'have' or 'give'?" Also, if a word has a long 'a' sound in it, how do you know whether to spell that sound with an 'ai', 'ay', or an 'a'? There are logical answers to those questions, and these rules are precisely what the more logical, literal learners need to know, to read and spell well. I have the answers to such rules, and more.
In all, I will do my utmost best to help your student fill in any gaps in their education, and will supply them with high-level academic tools to carry them through their educational years. Please call me with any initial questions. I would love to set up a complimentary meet-and-greet, to better discern your present academic needs, and to see if we are a good fit for one another. Thank you for considering my service!
TESTIMONIALS
ACT/SAT Test Prep
Without the help of Susan Follansbee and Scholastic Pursuits, there is no way I would have been able to achieve a full tuition and fees scholarship. Thanks to her, I went up by almost 200 points on my SAT, which has given me the advantage of a full-ride scholarship! I believe that it came down to hard work and analyzing patterns, which I would've never understood unless I had Ms. Follansbee helping me every step of the way. Thank you!
---- Samantha Meakins, Arvada West High School
I am so grateful for Susan, and her tutoring with our daughter, Samantha. Susan was a consistent and patient tutor as she walked with our daughter during her busiest school season. Samantha was personally encouraged by Susan throughout the process of learning the best testing skills for the SAT as well as beyond the 8 sessions. Susan kept in contact and continued to encourage Samantha as she took her third SAT and finally got the score she wanted. Susan’s services are well worth the expense and have qualified our daughter for several scholarships allowing her the freedom to consider several colleges with no cost out of pocket. Thank you Susan!

I would like to personally thank Susan for all her helpful techniques she taught me - I went into my SAT with the utmost confidence from her service. She was great to work with and personalized her teachings in ways for me to understand. She won’t let you down!
---- Hope Schwanke, Peak to Peak High School
Scholastic Pursuits' Test Prep program was a wholesome experience for me. Susan will personalize the entire process around your personality, to meet your needs and goals. Without a doubt this program helped me with the SAT (scored in full-ride scholarship range), and I would entirely do it again!

Very informed, I am learning a lot, and im enjoying my sessions
We are so grateful to have been put in contact with Susan. I had been battling for weeks to find a suitable tutor in my area for my daughter who was recently diagnosed. All tutors were currently fully booked or if I could locate one it would have meant hours of traveling time. Susan is truly a pleasure to work with and my daughter looks forward to her sessions. We have already seen a marked improvement in her reading, writing, spelling and overall confidence. Susan makes learning fun and has a very interactive approach which is fantastic for those with dyslexia.
Susan thank you very much for an outstanding support!
I began working with Susan (2 months ago- 25 hrs) on behalf of my 13 year old daughter who is challenged with ADHD and dyslexia. We had previously worked with other tutors and “specialists” who while committed to their practice had little success in teaching to my daughter’s visual learning needs. In watching Susan Interact with my daughter It was immediately evident that in addition to a great deal of patience, she is highly skilled in applying multiple teaching methods to meet the needs of her students. I am very pleased with the results I am seeing and am glad to have found Susan Follansbee.
