My first tutoring position was through a Southern California School District in 2008 as a part of their AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) program focused on 7th and 8th graders. This program stresses the importance of reinforcing a student’s learning by teaching them how to utilize text books, note taking, group learning, and library and internet research to study and find answers for themselves. As tutors, it was our goal to assist students in completing their assignments, while also instilling in them these learning skills.
This focus on empowering the student was meant to make an impact far beyond the 7th or 8th grade classroom; as tutors we showed them that they had the power to take control of their education and their future. I have applied this same ethos in every tutoring and teaching position I have held since.
I have worked as a tutor for over a decade in various English subjects and for students from eight years old to students in their thirties and forties. I have also taught English Composition and English Literature at the University level. As an educator, I have had the opportunity to bring hope and success to students who believed they weren’t capable of reaching their goals. I wish to continue being of service to students and learners of all kinds.
