Hello! I’m Eric. While I am new to HeyTutor, I’ve been teaching and tutoring history subjects of all types for over a decade. If you’re looking to improve your grades or scores in APUSH, AP Euro, or AP World, or any other history class, you’ve come to the right place.
There are many history tutors available, so allow me to tell you why I believe I’m among the best:
SUBJECT EXPERIENCE: I hold a Ph.D. in history from the University of Minnesota, graduating with honors in 2012. I’m a former professor at both Macalester College and UCLA, and I continue to teach part time at Pitzer College. I’ve published articles in professional history journals and given guest lectures at Harvard, Brown, and the University of Pennsylvania. I also hold an MA in European History from Marquette University. I know *a lot* about history.
AP TEST EXPERIENCE: I’ve been an official APUSH grader for several years, and know many individuals within the AP History and College Board organizations. This means I not only know the test, but I also understand the reasoning behind the College Board’s test structure. I’m always up to date with the test changes implemented by the College Board each year.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE: I’ve been tutoring students on history subjects for years and have thousands of hours of one-on-one experience. I’ve also taught at multiple private tutoring agencies and have helped each of them develop their AP history curriculum. I also have over a decade of college instruction experience, teaching dozens of different history courses.
STUDENT RAPPORT: I take special pride in my ability to connect with students, and to take complex historical events and explain them in ways students can understand. I’ve even published an article in The History Teacher (a professional journal) about my techniques. I take pride that I often develop long-term relationships with my students, some of whom I tutor for years, and many of whom continue to occasionally email me with updates about their life in college and beyond.
WHAT I CURRENTLY TEACH: I tutor students in many subjects (ACT/SAT, writing, & college applications); however, during spring semesters I focus mostly on AP history courses: US, Europe, and World. If you are looking to improve your class grade, or simply get ready for the exam in May, I can help.
I help students in non-AP classes as well. I work with all levels, but I specialize in teaching students from elite prep schools, which are often taught by instructors with PhDs whose courses contain college-level content (such as historiography). I’ve helped students at the Webb Schools, Horace Mann, Princeton High School, Phillips Exeter, and many others. I have also helped students publish history essays for The Concord Review.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM ME: Since each high school teacher has a different approach to his or her class, I don’t have a standardized curriculum or framework. Rather, I take time to structure a framework based on the abilities of each student and the demands of his or her class.
I also consider myself a “full service” teacher. I only charge for the time we spend together online, but I’m also available every day to answer any emails or texts about whatever history-related questions you may have. This is a free service I provide to all my customers.
And finally, I often give out homework! You may not like that, but I’ve found it’s essential if you want to reach your fullest potential. Typically the homework involves some form of practice test, which I will grade and we go over together during our session. Other times, homework can consist in additional readings I may recommend.
WHAT I EXPECT FROM YOU: I typically work with students for an entire semester or longer, as I believe the best results come from developing long-term relationships between the teacher and student.
I also expect students to come to lessons having done their class’s assigned readings and anything else they need in order to be prepared to learn. If you choose to come to our session unprepared, you won’t be getting the most value for your money.
FEEL FREE TO MESSAGE and/or to set up a free phone consultation. I look forward to hearing form you!
